The Experience

"I took part in the summer Sonata program in August 2009 and very quickly realized it was one of the best things I have ever done for myself. It was sheer self-indulgence, the chance to focus fully on something I love among others who were doing the same. It was equal parts practice, learning, talk, good food…and all fun.

I was impressed by the ability of the teachers to sit down with, in effect, a total stranger and zero in quickly and accurately on just what that student needs. It was also great that the teachers were always around, socializing as well as teaching and interacting with students outside of the “lesson” setting.

In technical terms I think I was about middle-of-the-pack. There were a number of beginners in the group, and at least several who played on a level well beyond me. But there was a great feeling of shared challenge and interest and mutual support that erased any such distinctions.

All in all, it was a great week and I’ve already re-booked for 2010."

"Sonata Adult Piano Camp has been a life changing event for me for the past 8 years.  Walking in the doors at 5 Catamount Lane you can immediately feel the electricity, the camaraderie, the creative energy that pervades the house with a piano in every room...yes every room, even the closets.  Imagine what it is like to be in a place where everyone is of one mind and where everyone shares one love...playing piano...kind of like piano heaven.  There are "campers" of every walk of life and profession and they share something that unites them like family even though they know nothing about each other and don't need to.  The love of music in that house and the creative vortex that it must sit on leaves me in tears every year when it is time to leave.  The freedom to practice as much as you like without repercussion, to explore new pieces, to push yourself beyond what you thought possible, to play in public to the most supportive group of people imaginable is incredible.  To experience Director Polly Van der Linde's ability to explain a piece of music and watch her make the music come alive with her words and playing is priceless.  Sonata is the one thing I do for myself every year; I can't imagine a year without it."
